“Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” Mark 6:31
I thought “Pause” would be a fitting theme for the month of July. There is something meaningful about this point in the year. Half the year is behind us, and half still lies ahead. Naturally, many of us begin evaluating where we are—financially, emotionally, spiritually, professionally, and relationally. Yet our instinct is often to push harder rather than pausing.
A pause is not quitting; it is creating space to hear, think, and move forward with wisdom. For much of my life, I believed staying busy was a sign I was stewarding my time well. If I was resting, I felt as though I was not being productive. Like many people, I worried that slowing down might be mistaken for laziness or a lack of ambition. I certainly didn’t want to appear either lazy or unmotivated.
Over the past several years, however, I have come to understand that pausing is not the opposite of good stewardship—it is an essential part of it. Throughout Scripture, God consistently invited His people into moments of stillness. Before giving direction, He often called them to be still, wait, listen, or rest. Those pauses were never interruptions to His plan; they were part of His plan. In the quiet, hearts were strengthened, perspectives were renewed, and faith was deepened.
Perhaps we all need to pause in every area of our lives:
Emotionally: Sometimes we are not angry—we are simply exhausted. A pause gives us the opportunity to recognize the difference.
Financially: Before making another purchase, changing jobs, or making a major investment, pause. Wisdom often lives in the space between impulse and action.
Relationally: Not every disagreement requires an immediate response. Sometimes a pause prevents words from becoming wounds and allows grace to take the lead.
Spiritually: Prayer is not only talking to God; it is becoming quiet enough to hear Him.
Many people avoid pausing because they are afraid of what they might discover. As long as they remain busy, they don’t have to acknowledge the grief they are carrying, the burnout they are experiencing, the disappointment they are trying to outrun, or the dreams they have quietly set aside. Busyness can become a distraction from the deeper work God longs to do within us. Yet healing rarely happens while we are rushing. More often, it begins when we become still enough to honestly acknowledge where we are.
If I am honest, church leadership was often the place where I found it hardest to pause because I convinced myself I was “working for the Lord.” There have been seasons when ministry responsibilities—boards, committees, meetings, and serving others—required so much of me that I kept going simply because people were counting on me. While serving others is honorable, I have learned that even those who serve need seasons of restoration.
This summer, I made the intentional decision to pause—to rest, to restore, and to listen for what God is calling me to do, not simply what I am capable of doing. Those are not always the same. Sometimes the most faithful thing we can do is step back long enough to allow God to replenish what constant activity has slowly depleted.
Psalm 46:10 reminds us, “Be still, and know that I am God.” Stillness is not inactivity; it is an act of trust. It is choosing to believe that God is still working, even when we are not.
So before you make your next major decision, before you answer that difficult email, before you say yes to another commitment, before you convince yourself to push through another day of exhaustion—pause.
Take a deep breath.
Pray.
Reflect.
Listen.
The answer you are searching for may not come from doing more. It may come from becoming still long enough to hear God’s gentle whisper guiding your next step.
