“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:2 NKJV

Happy New Year Readers! We are almost halfway through January, and I imagine many of you have your new year’s resolutions or new goals well under way. You know it is predicted by March, those resolutions and goals will have fallen by the wayside. So, how can you maintain these goals without quitting? The answer is you must reset your mindset. Without a change in mindset, you will just be facing another year doing the same old things the same old way.

During the holidays, I caught up on a Netflix mini-series titled “Maid” that I had started watching a few months prior. I have to admit, it was a bit hard to watch because I never thought the character, Alex Russell (played by Margaret Qualley) would ever catch a break. She faced insurmountable adversities one after the other.  She was broke, sometimes homeless, and oftentimes did not know where her next meal would come from, but she was tenacious, driven, and possessed a spirit of excellence. She may have been poor, but she did not have a poverty mindset. To put food on the table for her and her daughter, Alex took on a job as a maid. She decided if she had to be a maid, she was going to be a good maid. She realized this was only her reality for now; however, she was going to use it to get her to where she needed to go. Alex never gave up—she had a reset mind. She would not succumb to her situation. She believed through sheer determination and her unrelenting will that better was on the other side and she was right.

In an article titled, “Change Your Mindsets and Achieve Your Goals,” by 7mindsets.com, the author offers seven ideas on how to change your mindset:

  • Accept that your thinking needs adjusting. It’s less expensive and much faster to change your mindset than to learn a new skill. Acknowledge that you are going to work on your mindset first.
  • Identify your counter-mindset. Examples are self-doubt, limiting beliefs, and any other negative thoughts that may get in the way of your fulfillment. Taking note of the negative thoughts is a major step because we can’t change what we don’t acknowledge.
  • Flip the switch. After you have identified your top negative thoughts, you need a way to stop them from holding you back. The best technique is to flip the switch—turn your negative thoughts into positive ones.
  • Understand your “why.” Start fresh and decide on one goal or dream that, when you achieve, it will mean a transformational change.
  • Realize motivation and willpower are not enough. Recognize that achieving your goals isn’t about “white-knuckling” your way to success. By accepting this fact, you will stop mentally punishing yourself for not sticking to your plan—which will leave you emotionally freer to optimistically try again tomorrow.
  • Start small so you can finish big. One of the best ways to change your mindset and realize your dreams is through setting smaller achievable goals.
  • Get comfortable with the “F” word – High achievers are comfortable with the word FAILURE. High achievers realize that the only thing that will keep them from their goals is to stop trying—so they don’t.

Whether your goal is losing weight, starting a new business venture, focusing on your finances, or simply getting more organized, it all begins with resetting your mindset. Like Alex, through sheer determination and an unrelenting will, believe that better is on the other side. Let year 2022 be a year of change—you’ve got this!

  1. Love this post. Year after year I set New Year goals. Year after year I fail at them, usually before January ends. This year, I’m changing my mindset.
